College and Career Readiness
Preparing students for college or their chosen career begins well before high school. It is imperative that we begin to prepare students before they enter school with the skills necessary to become successful beyond high school. Success may take many forms but the current measurements of college readiness in North Carolina are the ACT assessments, ASPIRE (8th grade), PLAN (10th grade), ACT (11th grade). For each assessment, there are scores in area that predict the likelihood for student success in subject area courses at the college level. ACT assessments are knowledge-based and students must grasp necessary skills and standards for their current grade level to successfully progress to the next level. Common Core standards encourage students to think deeply into a topic rather than broadly covering superficial areas of study.
Higher order and critical thinking skills are also needed by employers in the workforce. High school graduates must possess certain reading comprehension, mathematical computation and personal relations skills necessary to be successful in the workplace.
